American Astrocultures: Imagining Outer Space

Abstract

This project examines how American film, TV, and popular culture as well as literature imagines outer space as a territory of colonization from the 19th century to today. It also looks at the transatlantic beginnings of the space age in the NS era (Wernher von Braun) and the ethics of spacefaring in an age of environmental crisis, militarization, and commercialization.

Ideas for articles

  • VWAs could explore individual works of literature, film, or other artistic products to examine these questions on their own.
  • In Philosophy or Religion, students could explore how humans have conceptualized their relation to the non-human cosmic environment.
