Musikstadt Wien

Kurzbeschreibung des Forschungsprojekts

Music is an essential element of urban history and urban experience, and therefore plays a key role in the creation of an urban identity. However, it is still under-represented in international urban studies. Questions concerning the arts in general – as a part of urbanity – play a subordinate role in the interdisciplinary discourse of urban cultures. The proposed project deals with music as a substantial component of the complexity of the urban system.

No other city in the world is identified with the brand “music” more strongly than Vienna. The cornerstones of the proposed analysis are public spaces and the topography/topology of the city, in connection with a new interpretation of musical events in Vienna based on case studies.
